They're not lying to you, but they are obscuring the truth, and they're making it impossible to know what's going right and wrong. The problem isn't that the numbers are inaccurate, it's that no website is just ONE SITE. A website is a collection of pages, and oftentimes, a collection of lots of different KINDS of pages.
