Google Solicits National Broadband Plan Ideas

July 16, 2009, 7:51 am

It's probably not much of a stretch to suggest that the average WebProNews reader spends more than half of his waking hours in front of a computer.  The National Broadband Plan is liable to affect you, then, and if you'd like to shape it, Google's giving you a chance.

Here's a quick refresher before we get to the new development: the National Broadband Plan is something the FCC is supposed to submit to Congress by February of next year.  The goal of the Plan is to make high-speed Internet access more common in the U.S.

As for how you enter the picture, a post on the Official Google Blog explains, "We've teamed up with the New America Foundation to launch a Google Moderator page where you can submit and vote on ideas for what you think the Commission should include in its National Broadband Plan.  Two weeks from now we'll take the most popular and most innovative ideas and submit them to the official record at the FCC on your behalf."

Interesting, right?  It's not every day that the process of making government policy gets this participatory.

Google's already laid out some National Broadband Plan suggestions if you want something to use as a starting point.  Otherwise, before finishing up here, we'll just mention that the earlier you submit an idea, the more votes it's apt to receive.
