Justice Department Opposes Revised Google Books Settlement

February 8, 2010, 11:54 pm

Last week, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a brief expressing concerns over a revised Google book settlement. The current revision was submitted to the court on November 16, 2009. The original settlement experienced antitrust scrutiny from the DOJ as well as criticism from a wide range of groups.

When the September 2009 hearing court date came for the review of the original settlement, Google, Authors Guild and the Association of American Publishers asked to revise the settlement. The judge overseeing the case granted the request.

So, now we have the revision, but the U.S. DOJ isn't liking it. They are encouraging further discussions to revise the settlement. The date set for the hearing of the revised settlement is February 18.
